What is it?

It is a method of measuring an individual’s entire scope of vision i.e. their central and peripheral vision. Visual field testing actually maps the visual fields of each eye individually. It is a subjective examination, in which patients should fully cooperate and understand the testing instructions.

 What is it done for?

It is used to detect any signs of glaucoma .Detection of central or peripheral retinal disease , optic nerve disease and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain.

 How is it done?

There are varieties of methods utilized to measure the visual fields .Visual fields are measured by a computerized assessment in the clinic or hospital. For this procedure one eye is covered and the patient places his or her chin in a bowl shaped chin rest. Then, when the patient sees lights or movement of various intensities and at different locations he or she pushes a button. In all standard test the right eye is tested first followed by left eye. This test produces a computerized map of the visual fields.

What are the benefits?

How much time is taken?

Time required is approximately 35 to 40 minutes which depends upon the patients response for doing the test.
What are other alternative tests?
Static, kinetic and goldmanns perimetry, amsler grid and tangent screen test.
When is to be repeated?
In glaucoma patients every 6 months or as per doctors advise.
How much does it cost?

The cost may vary from one hospital to the other.
