What is it?

Biometry also known as A-scan ultrasound is widely used to measure the axial length of the eye for IOL power calculation.

What is it done for?

It is done for measuring the axial length of the eye in order to calculate the power of IOL lens to prior to cataract surgery.

How is it done?

It is done with the help of a probe which is placed perpendicularly on to the center point of the cornea after anesthetizing the cornea and then it is interpreted with the help of spike patterns. The distance between the spikes, gives a measure of the distance from the probe as well as distance between intraocular structures.

What are the benefits?

1. Axial length measurement for IOL power calculation.

2-Measurement of anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and depth of a lesion.

3-To detect pathological lesions preoperatively in presence of opacities in the ocular Media.

What are the limitations?

1. Variable corneal compression.

2. Sound beam produced without precise localization.

3. Potential for incorrect measurement distance.

4. Incorrect assumptions regarding sound produced by the probe.

How much time is taken?

Time require for this test is 10 to 15 minutes.

When is to be repeated?

As per doctors advise.

What are other alternative tests?

Ultrasound of the eye, A- scan.

What is the expense?

The cost may vary from one hospital to the other.
